From Potholed Roads to “Comfort Roads”: Renovation of Taiping Community Paints a Picture of Residents' Happiness

"Look at this newly paved road—shiny black and smooth. Pushing the baby out for a walk doesn't jolt at all!" Early in the morning, Fu Daifang, a resident of Taiping Community in Taojiadu Sub-district, Xi District, Panzhihua City, stood on the newly renovated open space in front of her building, chatting cheerfully with neighbors. Recently, several roads in Taiping Community have put on "new clothes," becoming the most talked-about topic among residents after meals.

"The main roads are full of potholes, and the branch roads accumulate water on rainy days. Old people and kids often twist their ankles when going out." This was the most frequent complaint residents shared with community grid workers during daily visits. The community didn't brush off these casual remarks; adhering to the concept that "matters close to home are attended to," it immediately organized staff to go door-to-door to assess the situation and record needs.
On the day the construction team arrived, Zhang Yanming, a community Party member, stayed at the site with several veteran Party members. "The asphalt grade must be up to standard, and the number of rollings can't be cut—this concerns everyone for decades!" From road cleaning to asphalt paving, Party members took turns supervising the work, ensuring residents could voice their opinions to someone at any time. Now, the potholed roads have turned into shiny, smooth "comfort roads."
"Once, the open space in front of Buildings 3 and 4 of No. 11 Tai'an Alley was a well-known 'long-standing problem' in our community," said Wang Liu, deputy secretary of the community's General Party Branch. In the past, it would easily accumulate water on rainy days, requiring community staff to often come and unclog the drains. Moreover, residents had built random flower beds of varying sizes in front of their houses, which not only affected the appearance but also hindered passage.

Today, after renovation, this open space has taken on a new look: the ground has undergone blacktop treatment, a new drainage system has been laid, and the road has become flat and wide. The problem of water accumulation on rainy days has been completely solved, truly bringing convenience to residents' lives.
Now, in the evening, this place has become a paradise for children. Elderly residents sit in a row on small stools, fanning themselves and chatting—it's incredibly pleasant. "I used to have to detour when passing by, but now I come here for a walk every day. The community really cares about our difficulties," said resident Tan Qingbin, giving a thumbs-up.
With the roads paved, a new problem emerged: "Cars are parked randomly, so pedestrians have to dodge them." Community cadres thought, "We must see this good deed through," and immediately contacted the traffic police department to jointly plan. Once parking spaces and driving lines were marked, cars were parked neatly, and parents no longer had to worry when their children played by the roadside.
"Community cadres walk around the residential compounds every day, and many issues can be discussed on the spot," residents said. Problems are solved quickly and practically.

The changes in Taiping Community are a vivid example of the effectiveness of old residential area renovations in Xi District. According to a responsible person from the District Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau, this year, Xi District has been vigorously advancing livelihood projects in the Jiangnan Area, implementing 4 old residential area renovation projects, 1 drainage project, and 1 sewage pipeline renovation project. The renovation covers Dabao Ding Sub-district and Taojiadu Sub-district, improving municipal infrastructure. It has also completed the renovation of 13,000 square meters of dilapidated building facades, paved about 12,000 square meters of roads with asphalt, renovated 8,000 square meters of sidewalks, upgraded about 6 kilometers of drainage pipes, added 2 parking lots, repaired 580 street lamps, and upgraded 330 solar street lamps, benefiting 16 old residential areas and 5,913 households.
Today's Taiping Community has clean roads, a fresh environment, and more laughter among neighbors. Wang Liu, deputy secretary of the community's General Party Branch, said, "Common prosperity isn't achieved by shouting—it's done through solid work. Residents feel the changes at their doorsteps most deeply."
A responsible person from Taojiadu Sub-district stated that through the renovation of old residential areas, Taiping Community has closely integrated livelihood work with common prosperity, taking the improvement of residents' living environment as a starting point and taking solid steps on the road to shared prosperity. The District Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau also plans to integrate funds for 5 projects to start in 2025 in the next step, in conjunction with the Three-Year Urban Renewal Campaign, to further improve infrastructure in the Jiangnan Area. This will allow more places like Taiping Community to take on a new look, ensuring that the fruits of common prosperity benefit all residents more equitably. (Text/Photos by Wen Liyun, Zhang Junmei)
